American Cherry – Musical Instruments, Magic, and Hardwood
Flooring
For hundreds of years, skilled craftsmen have been crafting beautiful hand-made furniture, hardwood floors, and
musical instruments from American Cherry. This softer-type wood
handles well when working with it by hand or by using machine tooling. Characteristic of this species is its
fine furniture graining.

If you are looking for a hardwood species with a reddish tone, you may want to consider
American Cherry. This hardwood has a fine texture and a straight grain. Colors vary depending on the type of wood. The sapwood has creamy pink
tones, which contrast sharply from heartwood with its reddish-brown to deep red tones. It also has brown
flecks, and some gum veins are characteristic of this species. As it ages, American Cherry becomes a warmer
reddish hue. There is a pronounced difference in its hues soon after it is first laid. This happens within a
few weeks of its being exposed to direct sunlight and oxidation. When the wood is kept away from sunlight,
however, the darkening takes place over a six to eight month period.

On the Janka hardness scale, American Cherry is a 950. The Janka hardness test is a measurement that tests the
hardness of wood to see if it is suitable for flooring. In
America, this method measures the pounds-force required to embed an 11.28 mm. steel ball into a piece of wood at
half the ball’s diameter. The Janka hardness test determines the ability of wood to handle denting and wear. It is
also an indicator of how resistant it is to working with the wood, such as sawing and nailing. The Janka Hardness
for American Cherry is in accordance with ASTM D 1037-7 testing methods. Testing is not done on actual flooring. It
is done on samples.

Hardness varies with the direction of the wood grain. It is a moderately stable wood species, and is known for
its strength and stability. It glues well. It does not warp or move much when dried.
American Cherry can be used as residential flooring in any setting where its tones will match the color scheme.
Because of its softer nature, it is not recommended for commercial flooring.
In some instances, American Cherry can cause dermatitis when the skin comes in contact with its sawdust. In the
event of this occurring, precautions should be taken while working with this wood.

American Cherry can be found in the Eastern and Midwestern parts of the United States. It is not in abundant
supply and is primarily harvested as high grade lumber. Its price is determined by its absence of gum pockets,
pin knots, and its figure. The heartwood is the most popular part because of its reddish hues. In order to
deepen the color of the sapwood, some manufacturers steam the wood so the redness of the heartwood will bleed
into the sapwood.
If you are in the market for an upscale quality wood flooring option,
consider American cherry. Like fine wine, its warm reddish tones are enhanced as it ages, and its wood grain is
remarkable.
